British Trade
Week 2001
For the first time in twenty five years, a British Trade Week
was held in Barbados. Scheduled for Monday 19 to Sunday 25,
March 2001, it was a collaborative effort between the British
High Commission and several private sector companies. The
week, with the theme "British Business in Barbados" was
conceptualized by the Commercial Section of the British High
Commission (BHC), to increase the volume and visibility of
British goods and services in Barbados. A Management Team,
comprising BHC and private sector personnel, worked hard to
create a package of events that should interest members of the
local business community and the wider public. The major event
during the "British Trade Week" was a three-day exhibition at
the Sherbourne Conference Centre, which featured a wide
variety of British goods and services available from the UK.
Mr C. Tony Blackman Supervisor - Sales and Marketing Food and
Consumer Division of T Geddes Grant with Staff.
The first day was a "trade day" for visiting British
businessmen to meet their local counterparts, with the second
and third days dedicated to the family. A big attraction was a
special feature sponsored by Virgin Atlantic Airways which saw
a section of Sherbourne transformed into an exciting "visit to
Britain experience." Other business-oriented activities
included a panel discussion on e-commerce, a one-day
construction seminar and a business luncheon. Another
highlight of the week was the official handing over of new
fire vehicles and equipment supplied by the UK firm Angloco
Ltd. of Batley, Yorkshire, to the Barbados Government and the
Barbados Fire Service. The vehicles and equipment worth 2.4
million pounds are already on the island. There was of course,
a fun and relaxing element to the week's events in the form of
a cricket match at the BET grounds, a golf tournament at the
Barbados Golf Club and an "Elegant English Evening" at the
Colony Club Hotel. Strategy Consultants members of the British
Trade Week management committee were responsible devising the
logo, publishing the booklet, co-coordinating advertisements in
the media. It also represented the management committee on
live radio programmes.

Bin it, Barbados - March 28th 2001
October 29th 2000 -- Bin IT ! |
|
A FIRST CHOICE ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS |
 |
Today The City of Bridgetown sees the launch of "Bin IT",
Barbados part of a well planned and co-ordinated island
wide waste reduction program between Choice Environmental
Solutions and The Sanitation Service Authority. "Bin IT"
Barbados, is launched on Wednesday 28th March, 2001 at
10am in Independence Square, Bridgetown. The launch takes
place with the unveiling of the City's first Concrete
Litter Receptacle. The attractive "Bin IT" receptacle made
of concrete, has a metallic hinged top and facilitates the
capacity to hold 29 gallons of garbage. What makes this
bin so unique is its' added feature; hidden inside is a
germ-fighter rigid liner adding to its sanitation and
tenacity. The bin has been made in Barbados by Choices'
team of skilled craftsmen. Hence, Choice has placed a
substantial amount of resources into the project. Its
sister company is carrying out production, which is
currently on schedule.
Each day Barbados collects 600 tonnes of garbage
consisting of paper, plastic, glass, ferrous and
non-ferrous cans and aerosols. Under the Collection and
Disposal of Refuse Regulation 1975, refuse containers with
a volume greater than 29 US galleons are hazardous. Around
the island oil drums/plastic drums are used which hold 55
US gallons. These drums are heavy to lift have jagged
edges and emit deadly toxins if set on fire causing major
problems for refuse crews and fire-fighters. To solve this
problem plastic refuse sacks were implemented. However,
the use of plastic sacks have the disadvantage of being
torn into by animals causing refuse to litter the area. In
order to alleviate the problem of torn refuse sacks
littering the streets, underground bins were introduced
but they have proved awkward to lift by refuse crews
because they are set below ground level. Hence, "Bin IT!"
Barbados, has been launched to focus on the problems of
waste management in Barbados. It seeks to work with
educational institutions, sanitation and environmentally
conscious social partners. The project has been launched
to eliminate the use of oil drums and solve the problem of
rodents tearing the plastic bags, by placing them in a
robust, safe, sanitary and attractive litter receptacle.
Plans also include a campaign to positively change the
public image of refuse workers.
Choice Environmental Solutions, Managing Director, Mr.
Rodney Smith said, "We will work with the Sanitation
Service Authority on a coordinated plan of regular crews
to empty the receptacles as well as play our part in the
maintenance and sanitation of the bins. As well as assist
in changing the public image of refuse workers through
public relations resources." he added. Strategy
Consultants' Ms. Sandra Corbin, the projects Public
Relations and Marketing Consultant, said, " As Barbadians
enjoy a greater standard of living, using more packaged
food/snacks will become a way of life. It is vital for our
health and health of future generations that we dispose of
litter in a safe and effective manner."
The words "Bin IT" Barbados derives from the trademark
name for the new Choice Environmental Solutions concrete
bins initiative. The "Bin IT" Barbados project is one of
Barbados' first island wide "source", waste reduction
program. This new concrete Bin concept is the result of
several years experience with the local market which has
allowed us to deliver the aesthetic and technical
standards for our street-side litter bins. This will
provide a vision of the future, which will revolutionize
the look of the streets of Barbados. The Bin it Barbados,
bin is set to revolutionize the appearance of the streets
of Barbados in keeping with future trends of the
infrastructual development to take place on the island. In
his remarks on the impact of the introduction of the "Bin
IT" Barbados, project Managing Director of Choice
Publishing and Marketing, Mr. Rodney Smith said, "Since
1985, Choice Publishing and Marketing Company Limited has
provided Barbados with safe and attractive, high quality
litter receptacles. Concrete litter receptacles are the
only way to ensure safe, and effective waste management.
This new concrete bin concept is the result of several
years experience with the local market which has allowed
Choice to deliver the aesthetic and technical standards
for our street-side litter bins."
Bin it, Barbados is a complete litter management programme,
which assists companies, non-profit organisations and
government departments to find the perfect advertising
medium. Thus creating a sustainable environmental
programme in Barbados by encouraging the community to work
together. This incorporates corporate Barbados as well as
the wider community. Choices' Managing Director Mr Rodney
Smith explained the significance of corporate Barbados
commitment to assisting the environment. He said,
"Companies especially those whose products add
significantly to street refuse should accept that they now
have a real and urgent need to take responsibility to
contribute a small but vital percentage of their profits
towards providing litter receptacles where individuals
would have the opportunity to act in a more responsible
way".
Choices' also have plans to share its vision with the next
generation through an extensive educational awareness
campaign. Guests at the launch include: Senator Tyrone
Barker from the Ministry of Finance on behalf of Rawle
Eastmond, JP., MP., Minister of Environment, Mr. Stanton
Alleyne, Deputy Manager - Sanitation Service Authority,
Berger Paints General Manager - Mr Jimmy Douglas, Arawak
Cement Plant Marketing Manager - Mr Trevor Ifill, Ms.
Sandra Prescod, Project Manager - Sewerage and Solid
Waste, Barbados National Bank Manager Mr L Braithwaite and
The Commissioner of Police - Mr Grantley Watson.
In his comments about the collaboration Deputy Manager,
Sanitation Service Authority, Mr. Stanton Alleyne said
,"Bin it, Barbados is the beginning of an excellent litter
management programme. It is reliable and sustainable not
only in Bridgetown but all over the country. It is welcome
in places where people congregate such as Oystins and
Holetown. The SSA lends its support to the Choice
initiative by ensuring that the bins are cleaned on a
regular basis." Berger Paints General Manager, Mr Jimmy
Douglas said that he felt that the project went a long way
to "solving the problems of litter management" on the
Island, and that "BIN it Barbados follows our position on
protecting the environment, it encourages the community to
dispose of litter properly. Berger Paints fully endorses
the project and we would encourage corporate Barbados to
support the project."
Arawak Cement Plant Marketing Manager Mr Trevor Ifill
explained why Arawak decided to get involved with the
initiative. He said, "Arawak confesses to a significant
interest in the environment and has been in the forefront
of civic mindedness for some time, in regards to this
initiative Choice Environmental Solutions and the
responding social partners with a commitment to
sustainable litter control have caught the attention of
Arawak Cement Plant and its distributors."
The nationwide initiative was given full support by
Minister for the Environment, Mr. Rawle C. Eastmond, JP.,
MP.," He said, " In my view this project is a laudable one
and will definitely go a long way towards improving
Barbados' environment and lifting our country's general
ambience." "I therefore take particular pride in
commending this private sector venture which, I appreciate
will go a long way towards greening and cleaning
Barbados.", he added. |
